Colonial Discourse and the Suffering of Indian American Children Book Cover.webp

In this book, we analyze the psycho-social consequences faced by Indian American children after exposure to the school textbook discourse on Hinduism and ancient India. We demonstrate that there is an intimate connection—an almost exact correspondence—between James Mill’s colonial-racist discourse (Mill was the head of the British East India Company) and the current school textbook discourse. This racist discourse, camouflaged under the cover of political correctness, produces the same psychological impacts on Indian American children that racism typically causes: shame, inferiority, embarrassment, identity confusion, assimilation, and a phenomenon akin to racelessness, where children dissociate from the traditions and culture of their ancestors.

Hum ko man kee Shakthi dena

From Hindupedia, the Hindu Encyclopedia

Translated by P. R. Ramachander

Hum ko man kee Shakthi dena,
Doosron ki jay se pehle, khud ko jai karo

Give us the strength of the mind,
Before others attain victory, make us win.

Bhed bhav apne dil se saaph kar sake,
Doshthom se bhool ho tho maaph kar sake,
Jhoot se bache rahe, sach ka dham bhare
Doosron ki jay se pehle, khud ko jai karo

Make us able to clean our mind of differences between people,
Make us able to pardon the mistakes of our friends,
Make us to be away from lie and give us the strength of truth,
Before others attain victory, make us win.

Mushkilon pade tho hum pe ithna karm kar,
Sath dhe tho dharm ka, chalet ho dharm kar,
Khud pe hosla rahe, badhi se na dare,
Doosron ki jay se pehle, khud ko jai karo

If problems come in our way, please do this much,
Make us on the side of Dharma, Make us walk in the path of Dharma,
Let us have confidence in ourselves and let us not get scared of adversity,
Before others attain victory, make us win.
